Westfjords Winery is the first winery in Iceland & the northernmost fruit winery in the world. The company was founded in 2017 on principles of engineering, sustainability, and innovation. Despite the scarcity of grapes native to climates near the arctic circle, the island is home to bilberries, crowberries, and rhubarb. These fruits make up the core ingredient for our fruit wines. In addition, we use honey to make delicious beverages. Honey wine has a strong history in Northern Europe, and has finally returned to the country of Iceland in the form of pure mead (honey wine), methylglins (honey wine fermented with herbs and spices), and melomels (fruit honey wines). We expect to have our first batch ready by the year 2019. Stay tuned for our preorder announcement in late summer of 2018.
Our founder and head winemaker, Michael Delcau, had a lifelong dream to start a wine industry in subarctic regions of the world. At the age of 20, he began wine making as a hobby and continues to try and perfect the creation of craft wines and meads by innovating with new varieties. In 2015 and 2016, Michael resided in Iceland as an arctic fox volunteer and intern at a major biotechnology organization studying a class of antioxidant compounds called polyphenols. In 2017, Michael created Westfjords Winery to bring the first industrial production of fruit wines to the island. He received his PhD in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering with a focus on biotechnology and bioprocessing from The University of Iowa in the United States in May 2018.

Our opening is currently planned for the year 2019. We are working hard every day to create a unique product for your consumption and enjoyment. We will begin taking preorders on our first batch of a limited quantity in the summer of 2018. We will keep you updated on our production and finalization.
